The Mega Event of Cricket -ICC Cricket World Cup-2007
The ICC Cricket World Cup is yet again knocking at the doors of Cricket buffs round the world. The mega event is scheduled to start in March and April 2007 in the West Indies. Sixteen of the world’s top cricketing nations will compete in a “Festival of Cricket” for the coveted title of World Cricket Champion. The grand festival begins with a specialty that it is going to be held in 9 different countries with 51 matches played over nearly seven weeks. For sports fans, it is hard to imagine a more exciting combination – a top class-sporting event played in one of the most beautiful regions of the world.
The tournament officially opens with a Grand Opening Ceremony in Trelawny, Jamaica on Sunday 11th March 2007. The sixteen teams will be divided into four groups with the two top teams from each group advancing to the Super Eight Stage. These eight teams will then play each other in a “round robin” format, except the two teams advancing from their respective groups who will not play each other again in the Super Eights. The top four teams in the Super Eight, based on points, will then advance to the Semi Finals played in Jamaica and St Lucia. The Semi Final winners play the Final in Barbados on Saturday 28th April.
The Australian team will be all out to retain the trophy, which they won in South Africa in 2003, but it is India who will act its vengeance upon Australia for beating them in the last world cup finals. Australia remains at the top of the official world rankings and beat both Sri Lanka and South Africa in the triangular tournament in early 2006. But anything can happen in One Day Cricket. The West Indies are returning to form at the right time and New Zealand, currently ranked number three in the world, could be the dark horse in more ways than just their clothing.
